NUC Phoenix Arizona---Preview--The National Underclassmen Combine: Opening up 2010 in style

The National Underclassmen Combine: Opening up 2010 in style

By Matt Yanofsky

After a storied 2009 where many of football’s future stars honed their talents at one of 57 nationwide events, The National Underclassmen Combine’s 2010 season is officially here.

The combine kicks off at Apache Junction HS for the third consecutive year, with 8th-9th and 10th graders competing Saturday February 6, while juniors lay it all on the line Sunday the 7th. The Phoenix area combine, which also marked the beginning of the 2009 season, produced a number of excellent athletes.

Last years stars included:

Connor Brewer Chaparral HS: Freshman QB MVP. Brewer is a terrific young QB and has a ton of potential.

Marcus Brantley Gilbert HS: Freshman Offensive Skill award winner. Brantley has good athleticism and quickness.

Davontae Neal if Cesar Chavez HS: Fastest Man, Combine King and Freshman Overall MVP. Neal had a 34.5 inch vertical, 9’7 broad jump, ran a 4.19 shuttle and a 4.59 40 in addition to excelling during 1 on 1’s. Naturally, the man we call “Real Deal Neal” is one of the top underclassmen in the nation.

Tanner Morgan Apache Junction HS: A very good up and coming wide out with good leaping ability.

DJ Hubbard La Joya HS: Sophomore Overall MVP. Hubbard may be small at 5’5 146, but more than compensates for it in talent and athleticism. Hubbard had a 31.5 inch vertical, 9’6 broad jump, ran a 4.46 40, 4.34 shuttle and starred during 1 on 1’s. He is a special player.

Xavier Cooper Buena HS: Sophomore Combine King. Cooper is an off the charts athlete. He had a 32 inch vertical, 9’8 broad jump, ran a 4.49 40 and 4.39 shuttle in 09’. Players like this get fans, coaches and scouts excited.

DeMario Fair Fairfax HS: Fair is a good up and coming running back with terrific quickness. He also has terrific athletic genes, as his father Brian starred for the University of Connecticut’s basketball team in the early 90’s.

All athletes participate in pro-style combine testing, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press, vertical leap, and shuttle run along with position specific drills, 1 on 1’s and 3 on 3 competitions.

“The 2010 season is the most highly anticipated one in history”, said NUC CEO and President David Schuman. “I am glad we are kicking things off in Phoenix once again, the talent level and overall effort at the combine was sensational last year. I am sure that this year’s event will showcase some of our past stars and many future top prospects.”

Athletes can sign up for the combines on www.nationalunderclassmen.com or call 1-888-NUC-MVP1 for more details.

NUC Alum Signee-Blaine Clausell, Baker HS, AL Class of 2010 Now at Mississippi

Blaine Clausell, Baker HS, AL Class of 2010: Clausell, a star at the 08’ Gulf Shores combine, is a monster of the midway at 6’7 295. He is a physical lineman that is knows how to use his size and a great piece for a team that likes to run the football. A December graduate, Clausell is currently enrolled at Mississippi, one of six schools that made him an offer.

Future Outlook: Clausell is going to need time to learn the college game. He has great size and surprising quickness for a player of his stature, therefore should be able to make a difference sooner than later.

NUC Alum-Gareef Glashen, DB- Carol CIty-Signing with Rutgers

Gareef Glashen #7 CB Miami Carol City H.S. Dade County 6A Florida Football Senior 2010 Signing with Rutgers..>Check him out...Great Sleeper Recruit

NUC Alum-Jabari Price, Blanch Ely HS, FL Class of 2010-Signed with North Carolina

Jabari Price, Blanch Ely HS, FL Class of 2010: Jabari proved he is worth the price of admission at the ultra-talented Miami combine last year. At 5’11 171, price had a 9’3 broad jump, ran a 4.48 40, 4.49 shuttle and locked down receivers during 1 on 1 drills. Price has quick feet and his leaping ability makes him a threat for a pick six at any given time. The nationally rated db is going to UNC in the fall, turning down offers from Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Minnesota, Purdue and Rutgers.

Future Outlook: The talent is already there with Price, but desperately needs to gain weight before becoming a difference maker. With the right lifting program and dedication on the practice field, he should become a notable part of UNC’s defense.

NUC Alum-Todd Washington Lutcher HS, LA Class of 2010-Signed w. Memphis

Todd Washington Lutcher HS, LA Class of 2010: Lutcher, a terrific athlete, was a top performer at the Baton Rouge combine last year. With a 9’4 broad jump and 4.32 shuttle run in his arsenal, Washington has quick feet and good leaping ability. He is definitely a problem for QB’s and WR’s. He is headed to Memphis in the fall, choosing the Tigers over Tulane, Tulsa and Arkansas State among others.

Future Outlook: At 5’11 177, Washington needs to put on weight before contributing at the next level. The athleticism and coverage skill are there, so Washington should become a key player in 2011.

NUC Top Prospect- Dwayne Brown, Kaiser HS-WR/DB---tears it up

NUC Top Prospect- Dwayne Brown, Kaiser HS-WR/DB---tears it up

Future NUC Star- Elijah St. Hilaire-Class of 2012-Palisades Park Leonia, NJ-WR/RB/DB/KR

Watch Elijah Run and play the ball, great athlete with great skills, if he keeps working hard will be a top level recruit. Top level student, will be among the best in the class of 2012.

NUC Alum-Bronson Irwin Mustang HS, OK Class of 2010-Signed with Oklahoma

Bronson Irwin Mustang HS, OK Class of 2010: Irwin is as physically dominant of an offensive lineman that you will find. At 6’5 322, he already has pro-type size. I could only imagine the difficulties he presents for opposing linemen The massive Irwin, a top three rated lineman in the nation, heads to the University of Oklahoma in the fall, picking the Sooners over National Champion Alabama, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma State among others.

Future Outlook: Irwin has the size to become an immediate factor, but he needs work on his quickness. A solid conditioning program and good coaching will help get him ready for the next level, where he can turn into an All-American lineman down the road.

Schuman’s Insight: “Irwin is a big, strong guy with a great initial punch. He is a consistent performer who always gives you 100%.”

NUC Alum-Quayshawn Nealy, Lakeland HS, FL Class of 2010: Nealy, 6’0 215-Signed with Georgia Tech

Quayshawn Nealy, Lakeland HS, FL Class of 2010: Nealy, 6’0 215, was among the elite performers at the 08’ Orlando combine. Nealy is a terrific athlete with a good understanding of how to hold down the linebacker position. As a sophomore at the combine, Nealy had a 32.5 inch vertical, 8’10 broad jump, ran a 4.68 40, 4.36 shuttle and bench pressed 155 lbs 23 times. He was rated amongst the top 100 linebackers in the country by Rivals and is headed to Georgia Tech in the fall, turning down offers from programs such as Georgia, Nebraska, Michigan, Purdue, Virgina and Iowa State among others.

Future Outlook: Nealy has all the ability to become a standout but like most freshmen, will have to earn his stripes. Once Nealy takes the time to learn the Yellow Jackets’ defensive sets, he should develop into a notable player for 2011 and beyond.

NUC Alum-Tony Jefferson of Chula Vista---Signed with Oklahoma

Tony Jefferson, Chula Vista HS, CA Class of 2010: Jefferson displayed the potential to be an elite player from the moment he stepped onto the field at the 08’ San Diego combine. Jefferson, 6’0 196, has a tremendous understanding of the game and developed into a terrific safety after previously playing RB and LB. Jefferson runs a 4.5 40 and has tremendous feet, thus his ability to make a play is second to none. Jefferson, a top tier recruit, heads to the University of Oklahoma in the fall, turning away offers from USC, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Tennessee. Stanford and Oregon among others.

Future Outlook: Jefferson is evidently the kind of player that can turn into a superstar at the next level, but it will take time. Luckily, he has a terrific head coach in Bob Stoops and a great support system to guide him through the transition from high school to college. After taking the time to get acclimated, Jefferson should fit into the Sooners’ plans nicely.

NUC Alum-Brandon Pechloff: The Start of a New Beginning-Committed to Western Carolina

Brandon Pechloff: The Start of a New Beginning

By Matt Yanofsky

Brandon Pechloff’s recruiting process didn’t go the way he wanted it to.

The All-State QB wasn’t receiving the kind of offers he expected after passing for 3,199 yards and 43 TD’s this year while leading Montini Catholic to a 5A Illinois State Championship. The 6’5 senior, one of the best QB’s at the Top Prospect Camp, was puzzled as to why many of the players he outperformed signed to play at D-1 schools but yet, he didn’t.

“It was extremely frustrating”, said Pechloff. “I was always told (that if I do) my job on the field they’ll find you. I felt I did my job by (passing for) as many yards as best player in the country and by throwing for more TD’s than most of them. But at the end of the day, I had no offers while (other players) were getting offers by the boatload.”

Pechloff also referred to schools’ lack of interest as “humiliating”.

With a big time scholarship all but out of the picture, Pechloff committed to D-1AA Western Carolina on January 28. Although the Catamounts finished 2-9 last season, Pechloff is excited about the possibility to take over a program looking to get back on track.

“For me its an opportunity to play” “anybody can walk into a powerhouse program and win while putting up big numbers, but it takes a real QB to turn a team into a winner”.

He also cites his success in high school as one of the reasons he is confident as an incoming freshman.

“My high school team was expected to lose most games this year. We had a small team, but our hard work and dedication took us where we were. I think I can (take what I did in high school to help turn around) Western Carolina”.

With his letter of intent signed, Pechloff is now able to look into the future and envision success at the highest level. While he didn’t land a spot at Michigan State or the University of Illinois, Pechloff has little concern that playing for a small school will hurt his chances to make it to the next level.
“I have the size and style to go a long way”, Pechloff said confidently. “I think I can be a Joe Flacco type of QB (at the next level). I am 6’5, 217 at 17 years old and I think I will be 6’7, 245 (when I am done growing). Flacco was the #18 draft pick coming out of a small school and I think if I am good enough, they will find me”.

Pechloff landing at Western Carolina was far from scripted. He was planning to attend a junior college, but was contacted by head coach Dennis Wagner. Wagner, who is heading into his second year as head coach, was shocked to see a player at Pechloff’s level fly so far under the radar.

“We didn’t plan on taking a freshman”, said Wagner, who discovered Pechloff on the Rivals.com database. “But to get somebody of his caliber this late (in recruiting season) was quite impressive”

Wagner, like the NUC, sees the big time potential in Pechloff, but says the pro-style QB will have to work hard and earn his stripes before running the Catamounts offense.

“We have a returning starter (at QB) and a transfer from a UConn, so Brandon will have a chance to learn a lot and become the QB of our future.”

Looks like Western Carolina landed the sleeper of the year; Pechloff sure hopes so.

“It would be great if I won the starting job this year, but I know our incumbent QB is a terrific player and our new backup is solid as well”. “If I don’t get the opportunity this year I will redshirt so I can get the chance to play next year.”

“My goal is to star all four years revenge is the best part of it and all those schools that said I wasn’t good strong or fast enough, I hope to show them who I am. That is the feeling I am waiting for and what drives me daily”.

NUC Alum-Michael German Q & A Committed to Tennessee Tech

Q & A with rising star Michael German

By Matt Yanofsky

Blanche Ely HS standout QB Michael German is days away from making one of the most difficult choices of his entire life; selecting a college. German, a standout at multiple NUC events, is currently fielding a number of offers from respectable schools and recently visited the University of Miami.

Matt Yanofsky: Hey Michael what’s going on? National Signing day is just one week away and you are about to make one of the biggest decisions of your life. You have received multiple offers. Tell us about the process and time that goes into making the choice.

Michael German: A lot of thought has gone into it and this has been a long time in the making. My parents were very involved and I am going to make (a lot of my decision based on) the school’s academics.

MY: Any exclusive sneak peek insight for us? (laughs)

MG: I am thinking about Tennessee State but I am not 100% sure. I will know in the next day or so.

MY: You recently finished your final season of HS football. Tell us about the highs and lows of your finale.

MG: Every time I touched the field I went out there going to do the best (I could). This year, I broke school and country records. I led the county in passing yards and touchdowns, en route to being named to the All County team.

MY: You achieved quite a lot for a 17 year old. From the Overall MVP at our Orlando combine to getting invited to the Ultimate 100 Camp, being named to Miami Herald’s First Team All County and winning Scion Broward County’s Player of the year, your accomplishments have outweighed football players many years your senior. How does it feel to have so many achievements?

MG: It feels good but this is just the start of a new beginning! Every year I am looking to do more and make the most of my ability.

MY: You were also invited to our inaugural Top Prospect Camp at the University Of Okalahoma. What was that like?

MG: It was a great experience to go out of town and compete against the best athletes at the camp. It was extremely competitive and one of the best camps I attended. Getting to watch some of the best quarterbacks in the country (gave me insight to) my strengths and weaknesses as a player.

MY: At 6’1 200 lbs, you have a terrific vision of the field and a tremendous IQ for a young QB. What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring QB looking to improve his overall skills?

MG: Your footwork and (ability to read) the defense are the biggest keys. If you aren’t aware of the coverage and where the blitz is coming from, you will never be successful, so make sure to study that. The timing of your release is also important.

MY: Who inspired you to play football?

MG: My father. When I was 4 or 5 years old, we started to play football around the house. He took me to the field after that and I really got into the sport from there after stepping onto the field for the first time as a youngster.

MY: We know you are still in the process of choosing a college. Does this mean you are also in the process of choosing a major like many rising freshman or do you know what you’d like to study?

MG: I am going to major in sports management or business. I would love to open my own training complex if I get a business degree.

MY: Where do you envision yourself five years from now?

MG: I envision myself as a second, third or fourth round NFL draft pick. Whoever drafts me and wants to pay works for me!

MY: Thanks for your time Michael best of luck.

NUC Alum-Joshua Snead Smithfield HS, NC Class of 2010-Committed to Duke

Joshua Snead Smithfield HS, NC Class of 2010: A tremendous all around athlete, Snead was an elite performer at the 08’ Charlotte combine. At 5’9 168, Snead has a 31 inch vertical and 9’4 broad jump, while running a 4.57 shuttle and 4.44 40. He also did a great job during 1 on 1’s, displaying the ability to play both WR and RB. Snead is also a superstar in the classroom, thus has committed to Duke, turning down offers from Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina Sate and Vanderbilt.

Future Outlook: Snead is too small to be a receiver at the college level, but will be successful at RB and on special teams. His speed and quickness will turn him into contributor on the ground. After a year of getting familiar with Duke’s offensive sets, expect Snead to make some noise out in Durham, NC.

NUC Alum-Anthony Creecy, Southern Durham HS, NC Class of 2010-headin to NC State

Anthony Creecy, Southern Durham HS, NC Class of 2010: An athletic receiver with sensational hands, Creecy starred at the 08’ Durham combine. At the combine, Creecy had a 9’9 broad jump, ran a 4.53 40, 4.4 shuttle and ran terrific routes during the 1 on 1 period, earning him an invite to the Ultimate 100 Camp. He committed to North Carolina State in June, turning down offers from Clemson, Florida State, Stanford, South Carolina and UNC among others.

Future Outlook: Creecy’s tremendous hands give him a shot to be a difference maker. Freshman do however require time and seasoning to get adjusted to the college game. If he has a solid understand of NC State’s offensive scheme and works hard, he can turn into a terrific receiver down the road.

NUC Alum-Tanner Price, Westlake HS, TX Class of 2010-Committed to Wake Forest

Tanner Price, Westlake HS, TX Class of 2010:

Price, a 6’2 195 lb QB, put on a show at the Austin combine back in 08’. He has a terrific arm and does a good job of hitting his receivers downfield. Price is your prototypical gun slinger, therefore can guide his team into the end zone quickly. A terrific student-athlete, Price is headed to Wake Forrest in the fall, picking the Demon Deacons over Ivy League Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard along with other outstanding academics institutions like Stanford.

Future Outlook:
The potential is there with Price, but he will have to learn how to work more of a system offense. Gunslingers can become a danger if they rely too much on the deep ball, especially when playing a level up. With that said, Price is extremely smart and should have no problem adapting to the college game after a year of learning Wake’s offense.
