Oakton High School will play host to the National Underclassmen Combine's local event for the second consecutive year this Saturday and Sunday, where more than 300 athletes are expected to grace the field with hopes of impressing the higher powers at big time programs. With last year's camp producing D1 players in Kurt Fleming (Army) and Anton McCallum (interest from 15 notable programs), the demand to produce another standout is high.
"Most of these kids are aware of what took place at last year's combine and set personal goals to top previous performances", said NUC CEO & President David Schuman. "Any time there are multiple D1 bound athletes, the bar is definitely set pretty high, but chances are many of the 09' players returning this weekend will end up with respectable programs".
Exceptional players such as Iric Harris (a virtual lock to land a big time scholarship), Travis Hughes (three offers), Jimmy Boone (interest from at least nine programs), Connor Crowell (offers from seven), and Lamont Wims (formal offer from UNC) are all slated to make their triumphant returns to the same facility where they starred just one year ago. While all of the aforementioned standouts made quite a name for themselves, Harris and Boone were amongst the top players from all of 2009.
"The Northern VA/DC sophomores were arguably the best from all of 2009", Schuman stated emphatically. "As rising seniors, I expect most, if not all, of the standouts to be special players bar none".
Current 8th/9th graders are slated to compete at 8 am and sophomores are scheduled to hit the field at 1 pm on Saturday, while rising seniors will look to garner attention this Sunday at 1 pm.
All athletes will partake in pro-style combine testing, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press, vertical leap, and shuttle run along with position specific drills, 1 on 1’s and 3 on 3 competitions. In addition to the elite athletes receiving coverage on Rivals and Espn.com, statistics of every participant will be sent out to colleges at all three levels.
Athletes can sign up for the DC/ Northern VA combine on www.nationalunderclassmen.com or call 1-888-NUC-MVP1 for more details.
