In 2009, Alex Okafor was a 6'4 229 pound senior defensive end at for Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, TX. He was certainly a talented player, gaining much notoriety. Okafor was a second-team All-USA selection by USA Today and a second team EA Sports All-American. He started in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and participated in the inaugural Hawaii Prep Football Classic.
As a three year starter and letterman at defensive end, Okafor was rated as the nation's top strongside DE and the 14th best prospect on Rivals' top 100 national list. He also participated in the NUC combine and showcased his potential as a great run stopper and pass rusher. Alex showed plenty of athleticism and open some eyes that day.
"He has amazing power and size, has the ability to destroy the run and when he gets to the QB it is lights out", said David Schuman, owner of NUC.
During his season senior season, Okafor recorded 59 tackles, 12 sacks, 17 TFL, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and a blocked punt. Born a Texas native, Alex Okafor committed to play for the University of Texas.
As a freshman at Texas, Okarfor appeared in 14 games, posted 22 tackles, two TFL, and a forced fumble. His stats would continue to improve each year, with his senior season being his best. As a senior Longhorn, Okafor led the team in sacks (12.5), QB pressures (20), forced fumbles (4), tackles for loss (18), and he also ranked fourth on the team in tackles (68).
Now a 6'5 264 pound beast, Okafor is entering the 2013 NFL draft as one of the top defensive end prospects. He already possesses NFL size and strength, but he has room to grow. Okafor has a very powerful punch and he's able to get off the ball fast. His wingspan is another great attribute that allows him to create separation off the edge. Okafor has worked his way to the top, so expect him to be drafted considerably high and wreak havoc in the backfield at the next level.
