Position: Quarterback
Grade: 2013
Height: 6'0
Weight: 180lbs
Hometown/HS: Sherman, Texas (Sherman HS)
Strengths: Smith could be the hardest working football prospect in the state of Texas regardless of position. He lives and breathes the game of football and strives hard every single day trying to become the absolute best quarterback he can become. Smith is a dual threat QB who has the ability to beat you with both his arm and his legs. He thinks he is at his best with rolling out of the pocket and making the throw while on the run. Smith has the skills to put the ball right on target while moving outside the pocket. He has good instincts when scrambling around trying to find an open hole to run through and also has outstanding footwork whether that be inside or outside the pocket. Smith has solid speed and the ability to take off when nothing is there in the passing game. Smith is a true leader and a very competitive young man. He does not like to lose and is willing to do anything it takes to see his team succeed. Smith has the right attitude and work ethic you want in a quarterback and the talents to play at the next stage of football.
Weaknesses: Smith is an outstanding young man with several traits that work well at the next level but overall he has a few areas in which he needs to improve if he wants to reach D1 football. First thing that could be holding his recruitment back could be that he wasn't able to play quarterback at all during his junior season. Smith transferred to a new school and wasn't able to play his desired position. He sacrificed for his team last year and played safety for his defense and mainly was just looking for a chance to get on the field. Smith is not the biggest of quarterbacks. He doesn't have the desired height college coaches look for in their quarterbacks. Smith also needs to learn more about becoming a solid drop back pocket passer. He needs to learn more balance in his drops and keep the fundamentals of his throwing motion right on target.
Overview: Smith is kind of sitting behind the eight ball right now as he doesn't have any game tape at the quarterback position from his junior year and right now is a big time for up and coming prospects in the 2013 football recruiting class. He has kept in touch with several coaches who are interested in his overall skill set and knowledge of playing quarterback. Smith says coaches at Oklahoma State, North Texas, Baylor, Arizona and Duke has shown the most interest at this time and are all waiting to see him in person or wait to see how his first couple of games goes before they start to seriously consider an offer. Smith works extra hard each day because he knows he has a lot of ground to make up. He is planning to attend several camps this summer and he is especially looking forward to competing at the NUC Southwest 5 Star Showcase in Dallas in late April. Smith has the work ethic, intelligence and drive to reach his goal of playing Division 1 college football and the start of his senior season will be huge in the overall outlook of his college recruitment.
