On Saturday, high school football prospects from across the South converged on Baton Rouge, La. as they sought to showcase their skills in the NUC Five-Star Showcase. NUC President and CEO Dave Schuman along with NUC National Recruiting Analyst Barry Every evaluated the top players at the camp at Jones High School as several players performed in hopes of improving their stock in the all-important recruiting process.
Less than 100 players were chosen for the event, where they took part in one-on-ones and various other drills, to be evaluated by the coaches. From the pool of players that participated, MVPs were chosen for each position, in addition to the one player who exemplified leadership among his peers.
Here is 1-10:
10) Kris Weatherspoon of Natchez High in Mississippi was the DB MVP. A big defensive back at 6-1 ¼, 186, Weatherspoon is a physical safety who has long arms and a great bump. He covers well and has great range, great upside for this player.
9) Donovan McCray of McKinley High in Louisiana was the DL MVP. At 6-1 ½, 257, McCray has a powerful body, great physicality and a great get off the line. He is strong, has good hands an excellent frame - a speed rusher off the edge at the next level.
8) Quentin Gibson of Archbishop Shaw in Louisiana was the QB MVP. At 6-1, 156, Gibson showed an excellent deep ball and is a supreme athlete. He is very accurate and has a fantastic arm, but must work on his delivery.
7) Jacory Washington of Westlake in Louisiana was the Tight End MVP. At 6-5, 206, Washington has tremendous size and great hands. He is very physical and strong - has excellent upside.
6) Kent Shelby of Archbishop Shaw in Louisiana was the WR MVP. He has great size at 6-2, 175 and possesses great discipline. He showed great hands and great speed and has great last-second separation skills. Needs to work on dropping his hips on routes, though.
5) Garrett Brumfield of University Lab School in Louisiana impressed as an underclassmen at the event. A member of the Class of 2014, Brumfield is a great athlete who moves his feet well and has a great frame. He must improve his upper body strength.
4) Nick Brossette of University Lab School in Louisiana was the Underclassmen MVP, an incredible achievement given that he is just a member of the Class of 2015. Brosette is an amazing running back for a freshman - a big back at 6-foot, 203 with great explosiveness. He is very fluid and is excellent pass catcher, a player with real potential to be a five-star recruit.
3) George Moreira of John Curtis in Louisiana was the RB MVP. Standing at 5-9, 192, Moreira is a powerful back with great explosiveness. He couldn't be contained out of the backfield, a threat to score every time he's on the field. Part of the Class of 2014, Moreira has room to grow.
2) Deon Mix of South Panola in Mississippi was the OL MVP. He is a behemoth at 6-4, 318 and has the strength to match his size. He possesses a fantastic punch and when he sets in pass protection, he's very hard to beat. May be better suited to play guard at the next level. Mix is fielding offers from Mississippi, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Purdue and Southern Miss.
1) Brian L. Walker Jr. of Sulphur High in Louisiana was the Overall MVP. At 5-9 ½, 170, Walker showed great hands, good speed and is a very fluid athlete. He makes everything look easy and has the unique ability to be in great position to catch everything. Sure to be a fantastic player at the next level.
