The NUC's Ultimate 100 Camp is truly a special event. Athletes trek from a number of different states and sometimes, all the way from Canada.
Participants are selected from one of sixty plus regular combines, which are highly competetive to say the least. Those lucky enough to garner an invite are unquestionably special players.
Last weekend at Matawan HS, more than 650 of the top 8-11th graders in the Northeast Region came to play, hoping to take their game above and beyond previous highs. All of the athletes were clearly prepared and hungry to potentially earn a scholarship at a big time D1 program, but even though most participants were qualified to win an award, the spotlight was only big enough for a select few.
Bowie HS' James Holley was arguably the best player of the entire weekend. The talented running back had to share the spotlight with fellow NUC alum Jeremiah Hendy as Bowie HS, which created some recruiting frustrations, but after winning the Overall MVP, Holley's future looks brighter than a summer day.
The 6'0 194 lb phenom has great size for a running back, awesome footwork and was virtually unstoppable during the 1 on 1's. Athletically, he looks like the total package, running a 4.55 shuttle, 4.57 40 and jumping 9'0 in the broad. His all around talents are simply too good to ignore and those who attempted to match up against him can vouch for that.
Giant QB Erich Berzinskas (The Morgan School) has the looks of a pro even though he is yet to finish high school. At 6'4.5 197, Berzinskas' arm, release point, technique and field vision are that of a player many years his senior. His height, which help him scan the field, skills and patience powered him during the 1 on 1's and 7 on 7's, where he had little to no problem finding the WR's downfield.
Amir Waller (Orange County) proved to be 5'11.5 184 lbs of terror; for the defense that is. Waller was one of the very best performers during the 1 on 1's, making a number of terrific catches after running near perfect routes. Waller was virtually unstoppable when single covered and he has the skills to pay the bills.
Friendly HS' Sherrod Baltimore (Friendly) has all of the athletic gifts to make it to the next level. The 5'10 154 lb phenom has a 36 inch vertical, 9'8 broad jump, ran the shuttle in 4.03 seconds and the 40 in 4.50. He proved to be major nuisance to the offense during the 1 on 1's, using his great footwork, awesome hips and pro-like ball hawking skills to stake his claim amongst the elite. Talent wise, it is all there for Baltimore, but he needs to put on some weight before making a difference in the college game.
Nick Rossi (Riveside) has terrific all around skills and great size for a linebacker. At 6'0 228, he is strong (bench pressing 185 lbs 34 times), quick (running a jaw dropping 4.11 shuttle) and athletic (with an 8'9 broad jump). Rossi's man coverage ability was tops amongst linebackers and he simply wrecked havoc on the offense during the 1 on 1's. He has the looks of a player who can be a big time difference maker and a tackle machine at the next level.
Peele Leads Star Studded Sophomore Session!
Linden HS' Ruhnann Peele won the Overall MVP award after capping off a terrific sophomore combine. The 6'0 173 lb prospect had an 8'11 broad jump and 28'5 inch vertical during the testing, but his position skills were what set him apart from the competition.
Peele had great hands, made many clutch grabs, runs crisp routes and made himself an available target for the QB's throughout the 1 on 1's. Many different DB's stepped up to cover him but few, if any, had success against Peele in man coverage. He proved to be the type of WR that a QB can rely on when it matters most.
Eric Enderson (Phoebus) has a golden arm, awesome accuracy, great footwork and is a natural born leader; not bad for a rising junior right? The 6'1 182 lb standout was in a league of his own compared to the other QB's and his well rounded skills make him a player worth keeping an eye on.
JC "King" Coleman (Oscar Smith) has become an NUC regular. The 5'6.5 163 lb running back brought home multiple awards at past combines and is only getting better. While some will question his lack of size, Coleman's skills are simply sensational, with a 33.5 inch vertical, 9'4 broad jump, 4.41 shuttle, 4.51 40 and 20 reps at 155 lbs in the bench press proving to be more than enough to silence his harshest critics.
Coleman is lightning quick, changes directions well and consistently got open during the 1 on 1's. Skill wise, few are as good as Coleman, and with two years of eligibility left, expect him to be a top notch prospect as long as he continues to grow.
Kyle Kerrick (Coatsville) was a major problem for the defense during the individual period. He has great size at 6'2.5 182, has good hands, runs nice routes and was able to elevate above the DB's to get the ball. Athletically, he was also a top performer, running a 4.53 40, jumping 8'10 in the broad and bench pressing 155 lbs 20 times.
Jackie "Shutdown" Bruer III (St. Albans) close the door on the defensive linemen throughout the 1 on 1's. The 6'0.5 294 lb standout used his size to his advantage along with sensational footwork, awesome quickness and great upper body strength to neutralize the hard charging d-linemen as if it were nothing. Bruer has all the necessary tools to make it a long way.
Bryton "Raise The" Barr did exactly that after dominating at the linebacker position. The 5'11.5 203 lb Barr is fast (running a 4.16 shuttle), has top notch strength (tossing up 155 lbs 24 times) and athletic (jumping 9'3 in the broad). During the 1 on 1's, he outmuscled the WR's, played with a high level of intensity and made many impressive plays, placing himself amongst the top overall players from the class of 2012 session.
Unforgettable Freshman!
· Overall MVP Eric Levenberry Jr (Dematha Catholic) has tremendous size for a freshman at 6'1 216, bench pressed 135 lbs 27 times and couldn't be broken during the 1 on 1;s. Levenberry has great footwork, awesome athleticism for a player his size, great instincts and really understands how to play the game. As a sophomore in 2011, Levenberry has what it takes to be a big time star at the varsity level.
· QB Christopher Laviano (Holy Trinity) is a passing machine. The 6'1 188 lb standout is accurate, has great zip on his passes and displayed great fundamentals for a kid who is just one year removed from being an 8th grader. Lariano works hard, has great skills and was clearly one of the top performers.
· Buddy Brown (Hammonton) scared in at 6'1.5 190 and stepped off the field as a superstar. Brown is a phenomenal athlete (running a 4.44 shuttle, jumping 8'7 in the broad and bench pressing 135 lbs 26 times) and was the total package during 1 on 1's. He works hard, plays with great intensity and stepped up to make a number of plays. With size, skill and a winning attitude, Brown is loaded with potential.
· David Williams (6'0 178, West Cathedral HS) and Dean Wilson (5'10 154, Red Lion Christian) starred at the RB and WR positions respectively. Both men had terrific athleticism, good hands, ran smooth routes and created a major buzz during the 1 on 1's.
