Bishop Kearny HS hosted the NUC's first ever area combine last weekend and after a highly competitive Saturday afternoon, a number of terrific prospects appeared ready for the next level.
Trekking all the way from Canada and earning the Overall MVP award was Richmond Hill HS' Roman Grozman. At 6'3 292, Grozman dominated the 1 on 1's, using his exceptional size, strength and surprising lateral quickness to neutralize the opposing linemen. Grozman also bench pressed 185 lbs 15 times and is a lock to play football at the next level, regardless of which side of the US border it is on.
Perennial top performer and D1 lock Quentin Gause (Bishop Kearney) starred once again, taking home the LB MVP and Leadership award. Gause is a natural born leader with a terrific attitude and an outstanding running back. The 6'0.5 205 lb prospect is strong (bench pressing 185 lbs 20 times) athletic (8'10 broad jump/4.57 shuttle), is smooth with the ball and has a great understanding of the game. Gause, who has offers from Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, Duke. Louisville and Akron heading into his senior year, will be a great addition wherever he ends up.
Bath-Haverling's Nick Carroll was the best defensive player at the event. The 5'11 190 lb corner back had great jamming ability, excellent ball skills, transitions well during 1 on 1's and is silky smooth on his feet. He is also an excellent athlete, with a 9'1 broad jump, 4.35 shuttle, 29.5 inch vertical, and 22 reps at 185 lbs on the bench press. Carroll provides exactly what coaches are looking for from a defensive back.
Standout Underclassmen!
Freshman LB MVP Dan Davis (Union Endicott) was an exceptional freshman and made major waves during the first combine session for current 8-10th graders. At 5'11 196, the powerful linebacker bench pressed 135 lbs 26 times, ran a 4.51 shuttle, had excellent instincts and applied constant pressure on the RB's during 1 on 1's. Even though the camp is non contact, Davis gave us every reason to believe he is a tackle machine.
Gates Chili's Marcus McGill was just that much better than the other wideouts, taking home the Sophomore WR MVP and Leadership awards. McGill caught the ball at its highest point, has good hands and got off the line quickly. He did a terrific job during the testing as well, with a 32 inch vertical, 9'0 broad jump and 4.51 shuttle run powering his star performance. The 5'11 190 lb standout's work ethic is truly second to none and his future is looking bright as ever.
Sophomore DL MVP/Strongest Man Eli Ankou (St. Peter's, CN) is 6'2.5 245 lbs of mean. The class of 2012 prospect was a force during the 1 on 1's, using quick feet and awesome all around strength to overpower the opposing linemen. He is also a solid athlete and used nice moves to beat the OL on a regular basis.
8th grader Julien Moore ran the fastest shuttle by a non-high schooler in NUC history and created a major buzz following his sensational performance. The 5'6 153 lb half back was a unanimous choice for the 8th Grade MVP after starring during the 1 on 1 and running an unbelievable 4.24 shuttle. Moore has an outstanding future and should be a standout for years to come.
