West Salem High School will be rockin' this Sunday when the National Underclassmen Combine makes their triumphant return to the same city where one of the best prospects from all of 09' took flight.
Just one year ago, the 6'4.5 219 lb Lyerla was in a league of his own. In a class by himself and simply unmatched. In winning the Overall MVP, Lyerla put forth one of the most dominant performances in NUC history, jumping 38'5 inches in the vertical leap, 10'10 on the broad jump (second best in history), running a 4.27 shuttle, bench pressing 155 lbs 27 times and playing like a man amongst boys during the 1 on 1's.
"Lyerla was one of the most special players I have seen and I have no doubt that he will make it to the NFL", said NUC CEO & President David Schuman. "He can do it all on the football field and with one year of eligibility left, Lyerla will continue to receive big time scholarship offers.
Thus far, the immensely talented Lyerla has offers from 11 schools including Oklahoma, Colorado, Vanderbilt and Oregon amongst others.
"The sky is definitely the limit and while we may not find a player at his level this year, I am expecting a lot out of this year's participants.
Other notables to partake in the 09' Portland combine were 6'6 208 lb QB Austin Kent (interest from multiple D1 programs), Zach Chapman (committed to Eastern Washington) and Nathaniel Penaranda amongst others.
"In terms of talent per capita, this camp is amongst the best", noted Schuman, who said that the Portland camp is amongst the smallest numbers wise.
Current 8th,9th and 10th graders are slated to compete at 8 am, while juniors go for glory 1 pm Sunday May 30.
All athletes will partake in pro-style combine testing, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press, vertical leap, and shuttle run along with position specific drills, 1 on 1’s and 3 on 3 competitions. In addition to the elite athletes receiving coverage on Rivals and Espn.com, statistics of every participant will be sent out to colleges at all three levels.
Athletes can sign up for the Portland combine on www.nationalunderclassmen.com or call 1-888-NUC-MVP1 for more details.
