2013 RECRUITING COACHES OF THE YEAR
It takes more than one coach on a staff to help his school have a successful class. The Head Coach must take an active role in recruiting and the assistant coaches must work closely together in order to gain the signatures of elite prospects. As the 2013 Signing Class comes to an end the National Underclassmen would like to recognize the top recruiting coaches in the country. We looked for coaches that not only gained large numbers of signature but signed players that were going to help win football games. Each coach started the season and finished the season with their respective school.
1.       Fred Jackson, RB Coach, Michigan (Big 10)
Age: 61
Alma Mater: Jackson State
Interesting Fact: He was named National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2001.
Players Recruited: David Dawson, Derrick Green, Delano Hill, Khalid Hill, Da'Mario Jones, Jordan Lewis, Shane Morris, Wyatt Shallman, Deveon Smith, and Csonte' York.
Barry's Comments: Jackson did it again dominating the state of Michigan in recruiting.
2.       Adrian Klemm, OL Coach, UCLA (PAC 12)
Age: 35
Alma Mater: Hawaii
Interesting Fact: Klemm was the 46th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.
Players Recruited: Caleb Benonoch, Cameron Judge, Kenny Lacy, John Lopez, Poasi Moala, Christian Morris, Scott Quessenberry, and Alex Redmond.
Barry's Comments: Klemm helped recruit one of the best lineman classes in the country signing seven OL's.
3.       David Beatty, WR Coach, Texas A&M (SEC)
Age: 41
Alma Mater: Lindenwood
Interesting Fact: Beatty was an assistant coach at Garland High School when they won the 1999 UIL 5A DII State Title.
Players Recruited: Laquvionte Gonzalez, JJ Gustafson, Kenny Hill, Justin Manning, Jordan Mastrogiovanni, Kameron Miles, and Ishmael Wilson.
Barry's Comments: Coach Beatty dominated the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in recruiting.
4.       Larry Johnson, DL Coach, Penn State (Big 10)
Age: 60
Alma Mater: Elizabeth City State University
Interesting Fact: He is the father of former Kansas City Chiefs star running back Larry Johnson.
Players Recruited: Richy Anderson, Adam Breneman, Jordan Smith, Curtis Cothran, Tanner Hartman, Zayd Issah, and Garrett Sickels.
Barry's Comments: Despite the tragedy and negative media press over Jerry Sandusky Coach Johnson was able to overcome.
5.       John Lilly, TE Coach, Georgia (SEC)
Age: 44
Alma Mater: Guilford College
Interesting Fact: Coach Lilly was on the Dean's list his entire time while attending at Guilford College.
Players Recruited: Tray Matthews, Ryne Rankin, Tramel Terry, Reggie Wilkerson, Jordan Davis, Reggie Davis, and DeAndre Johnson.
Barry's Comments: He was able to sign four kids from out-of-state three of which are from Florida.
6.       Anthony Poindexter, RB Coach, Virginia (ACC)
Age: 36
Alma Mater: Virginia
Interesting Fact: Poindexter was an All-American in 1997 and 1998 while at Virginia.
Players Recruited: Zach Bradshaw, Kirk Garner, Tim Harris, Micah Kiser, Andre Levrone, Brendan Marshall, and Donta Wilkins.
Barry's Comments: Coach Poindexter raided Maryland of five recruits this past season.
7.       Kirk Callahan, DB Coach, UCF (C-USA)
Age: 28
Alma Mater: UCF
Interesting Fact: Kirk is the son of famous Armwood High School coach Sean Callahan.
Players Recruited: Pete Dinovo, DJ Killings, Jake Berman, Aaron Evans, Shaquem Griffin, Shaquill Griffin, Tony Guerad, Tate Hernly, and Blake Keller.
Barry's Comments: Callahan had a Sunshine State theme helping sign nine players from Florida.
8.       Jackie Shipp, DL Coach, Oklahoma (Big 12)
Age: 50
Alma Mater: Oklahoma
Interesting Fact: Shipp was the 14th pick of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.
Players Recruited: Quincy Russell, Dominique Alexander, Kerrick Huggins, Matthew Romar, Stanvon Taylor, and Charles Walker.
Barry's Comments: Shipp signed four interior defensive linemen all from the Lone Star State.
9.       Rick Kaczenski, DL Coach, Nebraska (Big 10)
Age: 37
Alma Mater: Notre Dame
Interesting Fact: Coach Kaczenski was a three-year starter at Notre Dame as an offensive center.
Players Recruited: Maliek Collins, Randy Gregory, Kevin Maurice, Dimarya Mixon, Ernest Suttles, and Adam Taylor.
Barry's Comments: Kaczenski signed five defensive linemen from four different states logging a ton of recruiting miles.
10.   John Chavis, Defensive Coordinator, LSU (SEC)
Age: 56
Alma Mater: Tennessee
Interesting fact: Coach Chavis has coached in the SEC since 1989 that's enduring the pressure of the toughest league in college football for 24 consecutive years.
Players Recruited: Kendell Beckwith, Josh Boutte, Greg Gilmore, Frank Herron, and Lewis Neal.
Barry's Comments: Coach Chavis stole three defensive linemen from other states making this Bayou Bengal and Bayou Pirate.
11.   Robb Smith, Defensive Coordinator, Rutgers (Big East)
Age: 37
Alma Mater: Allegheny College
Interesting Fact: Coach Smith may be the defensive coordinator but he earned his stripes by becoming a special team's guru.
Players Recruited: Nadir Barnwell, Josh Klecko, Dorian Miller, Delon Stephenson, and TJ Taylor.
Barry's Comments: All five of his recruits are from New Jersey as Coach Smith did his best to shut down the borders.
12.   Denver Johnson, OL Coach, Tulsa (C-USA)
Age: 54
Alma Mater: Tulsa
Interesting fact: Coach Johnson played with NFL Hall-of-Famers Jim Kelly and Steve Young in the USFL.
Players Recruited: Rob Boyd, Chris Hall, Jaylen Lowe, Blake Mejia, Ben Oberste, and Zac Ules.
Barry's Comments: Johnson helped sign a good combination of offensive lineman and offensive firepower all from the State of Oklahoma.
13.   Tony White, DB Coach, San Diego State (MWC)
Age: 34
Alma Mater: UCLA
Interesting Fact: White was team captain for UCLA during his senior season in 2000.
Players Recruited: Kalan Montgomery, Brandon Porter, Darryl Richardson, Malik Smith, Marcus Stamps, Billy Vaughn, and Julius Wilson.
Barry's Comments: Coach White logged some serious miles going from California to Louisiana to Florida and back.
