The U.S. Army All-American Bowl showcased some of the best high school athletes on the country Saturday, as the West defeated the East, 24-12 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
With many of the players displaying their skills on national TV for the first time (the game was carried on NBC), it was west quarterback Cyler Miles who stood tallest, who finished the game 7-of-8 for 155 yards and one TD, while rushing for another. Miles claimed MVP honors with his performance.
Miles' counterpart Gunner Kiel, the NUC Midwest No. 1 player, also had a good day, taking the East 77 yards on the first drive of the game for the score. Kiel had too many turnovers, though, throwing an INT to UCLA commit Ishmael Adams and losing a fumble created by Texas commit Hassan Ridgeway.
On the strength of those turnovers and Miles' strong play, the West entered halftime up 24-6, after Pitt QB commit Chad Voytik scrambled for a TD. The 24 points scored by the West was the most by either team since 2004.
In other quarterback play, Southern Miss commit Anthony Alford had two costly turnovers for the East, throwing both picks to Texas commit Kendall Sanders.
The play of day came when Miles threw a deep ball to standout wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, who ran after the catch for a tantalizing 79-yard score. It was the longest play in the game's history.
Standout Players
Cyler Miles, QB -- Miles lived up to his billing as a poised, versatile quarterback with a tremendous tool set. The Washington Commit managed the game effectively and still displayed flashes of phenomenal talent.
Adolphus Washington, DE - The Ohio State commit was involved on two plays which resulted in sacks of Miles.
Trey Williams, RB) - Williams had a 38 yard kickoff return and also had a spectacular 95-yard TD run, which was ultimately called back due to penalty. The Texas A & M commit also had a fumble.
Kendall Sanders, CB- Sanders, committed to play wide received at Texas, recorded two INTS.
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR - Had a rousing 79-yard touchdown catch.
Shaq Thompson , S - The Cal commit recorded five tackles for the West, two for loss.
T.J. Yeldon, RB -The Alabama commit finished with three catches for 39 yards and five carries for 13 yards.
Jonathan Bullard, DE - The Florida commit recorded a sack and two tackles for loss and commanded a double team at all times.
Ishmael Adams, CB - The diminutive DB picked off Kiel and returned it 27 yards. Adams is committed to UCLA.
