Position: Quarterback
Grade: 2013
Height: 6'2
Weight: 195lbs
Hometown/HS: Carmel, Indiana (Guerin Catholic HS)
Strengths: Smith is a strong armed and athletic signal caller who has key attributes about his game that would translate well into the college football game. He has a strong right arm attached to his body that allows him to make all the throws needed. Smith has good control on his passes and has a strong enough arm to put the ball target even when throwing on the run. He throws a pretty ball and puts nice touch and spiral on just about every pass he throws. Smith has good vision down field and does a nice job of checking down and throwing the ball to the open receiver. He is not an athlete playing quarterback. Smith is a passing quarterback who has the speed and athleticism to make something happen with his legs and running ability. Smith has good pocket presence and does his best to stay in the play and try to complete the pass. He wants to complete as many passes as he can. Overall Smith has good skills for the quarterback position and has the potential to eventually line up under center in Division 1 football.
Weaknesses: Smith excites you with his overall potential but has several areas in his game that needs polishing if he wants to compete on the Division 1 football level. Smith has outstanding athleticism but needs to work on the fundamentals of being a quarterback. His footwork can sometimes be too sloppy and that hinders him from dropping back in the proper way and not allowing him to follow through with his passes. Smith has quick feet but needs to control them better. Smith needs to learn that he needs to get into his three step drop quicker so he can manage the field better and find the open receiver. Smith is still learning everything there is to know about being a quarterback but certainly has the right mindset and talents to reach his full potential.
Overview: Smith is an intriguing prospect and someone that could be an absolute steal for whoever finds this hidden gem. Smith reminds me a lot of former Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson. He is a bigger version at 6'2 but has the smooth throwing motion and natural athleticism to create a play on his feet just like Wilson. Smith has the frame and size to take the physicality that comes with Division 1 football. He is a tough minded young man that strives every day to be the best quarterback he can be. Smith hasn't received any offers as of yet and is only receiving lite interest from Division 1 football programs at this time. Smith is a player that has the capabilities to compete at the highest level of college football and should eventually see the recruiting attention come his way after competing at several camps and combines throughout the spring and summer.
