Benny McCall from Horn Lake, Mississippi (Lake Cormorant HS) competed at the most recent NUC 5 Star Showcase in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and he showed everyone in attendance why he is one of the top football recruits in the state of Mississippi for the 2012 recruiting class. McCall is a physical and smart linebacker who came to the showcase hoping to show out among other top competition as well as show everyone in attendance that he is someone that should be thought of when it comes to thinking about the top linebackers in the south.
"I really enjoyed myself at the showcase and I think I competed hard and performed well," said McCall. "I do think I could have done better but overall I did well and it was good going up against other top competition. I am hoping I receive a NUC Top 100 invite and if I get that you can guarantee I will perform much better."
McCall displayed excellent physicality and the ability to find the ball wherever it is on the field. He has a nose for the football and has the instincts to sniff out the play before it even gets started. McCall doesn't get pushed around. He has a thick frame and the attitude that no one will handle him physically. McCall has several areas that still need improvement but defiantly has the foundation needed to compete on the Division 1 football level.
"I think the best part of my game is my instincts and my physicality," said McCall. "I am a smart football player who pays attention to everything going on around me and I try to recognize what play is about to be run before it happens. I have good recognition skills and I always put myself around the football. No one will out physical me out there. I love the physicality that comes with football and I embrace it totally when I step foot onto the field. I know I have a long way to go and I am willing to listen to criticism so I can continue to improve my overall game."
McCall is currently dealing with his college recruitment and trying to figure out where he sits in the pecking order among teams recruiting him. He has yet to receive his first official offer but is holding out hope that the offer comes soon. McCall has received steady attention thus far and is headed this weekend to an instate school who McCall thinks could be one of the closet teams to extending him an offer.
"I am going to Mississippi State this weekend and the coaches tell me they are excited to have me on campus," said McCall. "I have a pretty good relationship with the coaches there and I really feel they could eventually become an offer for me and who knows that could be this weekend. I am not going in expecting anything. I just want to go down there with an open mind and enjoy myself in the best way I can."
Several other schools have seemed to take an interest in McCall and his talents on the defensive side of the ball. He has no idea which school may like him the best or who could finally become that first official offer, but he is willing to stay patient and take the proper steps needed into receiving the offers he is working for.
"I am wide open right now and defiantly interested in each and every school out there," said McCall. "Besides Mississippi State I am also receiving good interest from Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Arkansas State, South Florida and Louisiana Tech. I would say those schools are recruiting me the hardest right now and the ones staying in contact with me the most. I am hoping more schools get involved because I am willing to take my recruitment as long as I need to. I plan to take many visits this summer and fall. I want to be somewhere that truly wants me and somewhere I can succeed both on and off the field. I haven't found that place yet but I know God will help me find that place in time."
Schools Interested: Arkansas, Arkansas St, Boise St, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi St, Ole Miss, South Florida, Southern Miss and TCU.
