Hello athletes,
As the owner and founder of NationalUnderclassmen.com combines and showcases and also a high school coach, many people ask, how do I get my athlete recruited? How can my son become All American? How can he become a better football player? The NUC events netted over 120 players as all Americans over the 5 All Star Games. No one else has done that. We have also have had over 4000 athletes go D-1 in the last 6 years alone!
Well these are all very viable questions. Along with, how can I get my son to realize school is important? How can I get my son to realize how important college is to his future? Well there are some simple but important steps to all of these things. Let's begin.
If you have questions as you begin to read many answers can be found at
NationalUnderclassmen.com just by reading the articles, attending the events, and watching the videos, you will pick up many things that can help and learn more about the game!
#1 With respect to recruiting, the world is terrific maze! What does that mean?
Well first of all many athletes and families don't understand it, many coaches even don't understand it, more importantly there is a ton of misinformation out there. So let's begin...
A. You must market yourself in the right way, period. That means getting a great highlight tape and game film in the hands of college coaches. Choose the 50 schools that you are most interested in and that you realistically can play at and send your film to them.
B. You must go to combines, showcase, and invite only camps and college camps.
Why? Because it all comes down to exposure and name recognition, the more coaches and evaluators see you, write you up, and evaluate you the better chance you have to get a scholarship. Seven years ago when I began running events that was not always true, but now it is truer than ever!! That is why NationalUnderclassmen.com now offers many different events including combines, 7 on 7, training days, NUC five star (invite camps), U100 (invite) and Top Prospect Camps (invite) we need to evaluate you and see you in different situations. Coaches need reliable testing numbers, reliable evaluations!! When people tell you these are money making schemes, there is no such thing in high school combine and evaluation market place. No one makes big money in high school recruiting other than maybe ESPN. I always liken it to this; you pay to take the SAT's correct? You pay to get your car serviced? You pay to get a house? You pay to get tutoring? You pay to training for sports? All of these things you pay for are designed to take the finances you pay and provide you with a service. Combines and Camps (especially top ones like NUC) do exactly that! The money you pay goes to the coaches who coach, the facilities who host, the people who send out results, to servicing your questions and much more!! Invest a small amount of money now and get your son to the best college he can play at and reap 40 years of benefits and possibly over 200k in scholarship money.
C. Rankings matter, but exposure matters more. You must get your name out, only 1000 or so players get ranked every year but over 10,000 go on to play in college, so the most important thing is to get your name out there, period. You must attend events, contact college coaches, send them film and transcripts.
D. GRADES MATTER. I coach high school, and my own players who I preach this to on a regular basis don't get it, so it must be enforced over and over again. If you don't qualify with the NCAA Core classes requirements and the sliding scale you will not get a scholarship. The key is getting the best grades you can and score as high on the SAT/ACT's as you can, period! This opens up your world and your options. THE FIRST THING A COLLEGE COACH ASKS FOR IS YOUR TRANSCRIPT!!!
E. Help your high school coach! If you realistically can play at the next level, map out a plan with your high school coach and your family to help get your son exposure. This integrates your coach in the experience and allows him to advise you. DO NOT BAD MOUTH YOUR COACH! This can come back to haunt you. The coach is the final say in your recruitment and if he says you are a good apple it will help your recruiting! I have seen parent after parent bad mouth their coach and two years later are left without anyone recruiting them. BE SMART!
F. Have respect for anyone you deal with in the recruiting process. Do not bad mouth, do not berate, actually the truth is you should complement and ask for advice from anyone that can help you in the recruiting process and then make decisions that can benefit your son. You always want glowing recommendations. I have seen players get blacklisted by recruiters, college coaches, and evaluators, because of their poor behavior. Handle yourself properly and you will always be good!
G. Have a plan. If you don't have a plan to get recruited then you won't. List the events, training, academic schedule needed to succeed. If you don't plan then you will fail. So many people just think recruiting will happen, they will find me. Actually, unless you are among the top 50 players in the USA, they will not find you; you must find them and show them your ability. This is a myth. I love when people say, if your good enough they will find you and then when I ask them how their son got recruited they go.." well his coach recommended him, he attended the NUC, he went to Alabama's camp, He was in five 7 on 7 tournaments, we sent his film to schools, he was listed on rivals.com." Oh well I guess he was marketed! The most recruited athletes at all levels have a plan and execute on it!
