A gifted group of freshman showed that New York State football is no joke by tearing up the combine last Saturday at Middletown HS. The intensity level was high and every participant was eager to stake their claim amongst the elite, but after a terrific day of football, a few athletes stood above the rest.
Salisbury HS' Arkeel Newsome, 5'6.5 147, was the best of the bunch, taking home the Overall MVP. He proved to be fearsome for the defense, running a 4.45 shuttle, 4.88 40, jumping 8'6 on the broad and thoroughly dominating during 1 on 1's. As a running back, he changed directions well, displayed good hands and the word quit simply wasn't in his M.O.
Boeing Brown (Brookfield) left few questions to be asked about his ability after being awarded the QB MVP and Leadership award winner. The 6'1.5 178 lb sensation was vocal during the 1 on 1's hustled nonstop, displayed a terrific arm, good footwork and had uncanny intelligence for a freshman. Expect to hear more about him in the near future.
Shaquan Howsie (Trinity Catholic) was the second best running back of the day and rightfully won the RB MVP. Running alongside Newsome, Howsie carried the ball with passion and power, changed directions well and bench pressed 135 lbs 15 times. At 5'9.5 189, Howsie looks to be a fearful power back for years to come.
Dover's Anthony Greco proved to be 5'11 233 lbs of mean. In winning the DL MVP and Strongest Man awards, Greco bench pressed 135 lbs 21 times and proved to be a tough cover during 1 on 1's.
Matt Geisler (Pine Bush DB MVP) Nicholas Imperato (North Rockland MS 8th grade MVP) must also get props for standout performances, as potential was evident from each of these terrific young players.
Those who may have doubted New York state football should now have second thoughts.
