Four Canadians, two from the Greater Toronto Area, will play in the All-World Gridiron Classic — an all-star high school football game set for New Year’s Eve in Charleston, S.C.

Tevaun Smith, a wide receiver with Toronto’s Chaminade Gryphons, and burly offensive lineman Eddie Meredith, a Toronto Star all-star last year, from the St. Andrew’s Saints in Aurora, were picked to play in the inaugural game.

Running back Tyler Varga, who attends Cameron Heights Secondary in Kitchener and was MVP at the Canada Cup last summer, also was selected along with wide receiver Brett Weir, an athlete of the year at St. Thomas Aquinas High in London, Ont.

“Sure it’s an opportunity of a lifetime – and a chance for them to show their skills in front of NCAA coaches,” said Canadian regional scout Simon Lazanja.

Lazanja said the two teams would be determined by a draft of the invited players and organizers will pick up the transportation, accommodation and meals for the Canadian group.

The game will be played at the 18,000-seat Citadel Stadium and include high school players from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Croatia and Australia.
