More than 250 hard working athletes graced the field last weekend at Memphis' Christian Brothers Academy for what turned out to be a weekend to remember. Every participant shared the goal of making it onto the next level. All of the athletes played at full speed, doing everything in their power to potentially earn themselves in the Ultimate 100 Camp; but after a highly competitive event, a select group of athletes were a step ahead of the competition.
Oxford HS d-lineman Terry Johnson was recognized as the best of the weekend, earning the Overall MVP during the junior session. The 6'0.5 261 lb Johnson was in a league of his own during the 1 on 1's and those around him quickly realized the talent he possesses. Johnson had exceptional strength backed by good quickness. Aggression supported by smarts and an aura of moves that would make participants from Dancing with the Stars jealous.
His potential is sky high and Johnson is unquestionably a D1 bound sensation.
Terry Redden (Whitehaven) was another terrific d-lineman that put forth a worthy performance. At 6'2.5 275, Redden had exceptional size, nice strength, solid athleticism for a player his size and surprisingly quick feet. The rising senior took home the DL MVP and would have won the Overall MVP award at many other events.
Walter Evans II may be the second in his family with that name but he is unquestionably first in class as a football player. The 5'9.5 157 lb receiver had a 31.5 inch vertical, 8'9 broad jump, ran a 4.45 shuttle, 4.54 40 and starred during the 1 on 1. Evans' hands were terrific, routes were tightly ran and moves were honorable.
Walton's World!
Jaylon Walton of Ridgeway HS came into the combine looking to make a name for himself and left with something that perhaps even he thought was out of reach; the Overall MVP award. The 5'7 150 lb Walton, who is a running back, has nice feet, runs hard and can change directions on the time. Athletically, Walton looks to be the total package, with a 33 inch vertical, 8'4 broad jump, 4.42 shuttle run a 4.44 40 only making him that much more touted of a recruit.
6'2 187 lb Grant Powell (Christian Brothers) definitely felt at home while competing at his school's field. He threw a number of great passes, had tremendous technique, placed the ball in the perfect spot for his receivers and was cool, calm and collective throughout the event. Powell, who also ran a 4.44 shuttle, has the look of a terrific QB and has the characteristics of a player many years his senior.
Glenn "The Pest" Adesoji created plenty of frustrations for the offense when he toed the line during 1 on 1's. The 5'9 176 lb standout had great footwork, excellent jamming ability, changes directions well and pro-style ball skills. Simply put, Adesoji was a wide receivers' worst nightmare and few had success against him. Adesoji also was an elite performer during the testing, as his 35.5 inch vertical, 8'11 broad jump and 21 reps at 155 lbs on the bench press made him that much more dangerous.
Freshman News, Notes and Notables!
Darrius Sims of Whitehaven HS was the Freshman session's top performer and evidently so. The 5'9 165 lb d-back's skills were unmatched during the 1 on 1's, as his footwork, man to man coverage, ball skills and great hips were too much for the offense to overcome when they were matched against him.
Dannon Cavil, 6'3 199 (White Station) has great size for a freshman QB and clearly stood out during the 1 on 1's. His physical tools were terrific, he threw a good ball and a patient passer as well. Athletically, Cavil was off the charts, with a 31.5 inch vertical, 9'1 broad jump, 4.45 shuttle and 4.62 40. Few freshman can claim his size and overall skill level.
