Standout QB Jonovan Griffin of McKinney Boyd HS capped off an excellent day at the first of what looks to be a long run of successful combines in San Antonio.
The 5'10.5 162 lb QB played at a high level throughout the 1 on 1's and during the testing, making him the center of attention. Griffin runs a 4.26 shuttle and 4.43 40, making him a threat to take off every time he takes the ball under center. He had a 10'5 broad jump and a 32 inch vertical as well, in addition to dominating the individual period.
Griffin has a cannon for an arm, good technique, exceptional footwork and plays patiently at all times, waiting for the right opportunity to move the ball rather than force the play like many QB's his age would. Griffin needs to get stronger physically, but as the Overall MVP and Combine King award winner, he has the necessary tools to take his game to the next level, even if it may be as an athlete.
Standout d-lineman Michael Joilett (West Brook) was just that much faster than those standing at the opposite end of the ball. The 6'3.5 200 lb standout displayed exceptional foot quickness (running a 4.58 shuttle), great hands and outstanding moves, enabling him to wreck havoc during the 1 on 1's. Joilett, the co-DL MVP along with undersized Joel White, needs to gain weight if he is hoping to play d-end in college. With his quickness and talent, a move to linebacker is a definitely possibility.
Phenom defensive back Jacob Garza of Mission Memorial high school made major waves during the 1 on 1's with his refuse to lose attitude. The gritty 5'8 157 lb safety played physical against much bigger WR's, maintained consistency in his style, had good hips, awesome closing speed and nice ball skills. Garza's athleticism also played a key factor in his success, as his 30 inch vertical, 9'0 broad jump, 4.29 shuttle run and 4.58 40, gave him more than enough talent to make up for his lack of size.
Injuries Can't Stop Bynum!
Nagging injuries attempted to slow down Elsik HS' Jerry Bynum, but the gutsy running back overcame some difficult moments to standout amongst the sophomores. The slick and quick Bynum ran a 4.54 shuttle and 4.69 40, both of which are solid especially considering his injuries. Bynum also had a 9'10 broad jump and bench pressed 155 lbs 17 times. From what we were able to gage, Bynum's has the looks of a dual threat and it will definitely be interesting when he returns to the Ultimate 100 Camp at full strength.
Braxton Bartlett (Atascocita) was nothing short of sensational, taking home the LB MVP and Combine King awards. The athletically gifted 5'10 171 lber had a 36 inch vertical, 9'6 broad jump, ran a 4.50 shuttle and bench pressed 155 lbs 22 times. Bartlett's exceptional quickness and strength put him in a league of his own during 1 on 1's, where he neutralized the offense when he stepped up to the plate. With great foot quickness in addition to being a standout all around athlete, Bartlett looks to be a run stopping machine.
Grantham Huguley of Churchill HS had all the tools to be an excellent receiver for many years to come. Huguley impressed coaches with his great hands, tightly ran routes and ability to create separation during the 1 on 1's, where many DB's were burnt like bad toast. He knew how to get open and even made some grabs in traffic, earning him the Overall MVP award after an admirable performance.
Hunter Runs the Show!
Harlington's Omar Hunter created a major buzz last Saturday at Somerset HS following an his Overall MVP/Combine King winning performance. Hunter, 5'9.5 163, ran the best routes of the day and had soft hands, placing him atop the group of wide receivers. Hunter was also a stud athletically, with a 32.5 inch vertical, 8'6 broad jump and 4.53 shuttle powering his successful day. The sky is definitely the limit and with three years of high school left, expect to hear more about him in the near future.
6'0 153 lb Kyle Poeske of Boerne Champion HS won the QB MVP and Leadership Awards. Poeske ran hard throughout the day, displayed a winning attitude and kept those around him fired up. During the 1 on 1's, he had complete control of the action, with great mechanics, nice footwork and a quick release putting him atop the charts. Poeske's leadership ability and control over the offense were simply outstanding for a freshman.
