2011 FWAA All-America Team Unveiled

2011 FWAA All-America Team Unveiled
DALLAS (FWAA) - The 68th Football Writers Association of America All-America Team is dominated by standouts from the Southeastern Conference, which placed 10 players on the squad. That is twice as many as the next highest number from any league, five from the offense-oriented Big 12 Conference.

The FWAA All-America Team, the second longest continuously-published team, has been a staple of college football scene since 1944. The FWAA has only selected a first-team All-America squad in each season since 1950.

Of the 10 SEC players, seven were on defense where LSU and Alabama, considered the nation's two top defensive teams, had three each. Georgia had the other. Alabama also placed two offensive players on the team, running back and Heisman Trophy finalist Trent Richardson, and Outland Trophy-winning tackle Barrett Jones.

Eleven of the 25 players selected to the team by the All-America committee come from the nation's top three teams. No. 2 Alabama led all teams with five FWAA All-Americans, followed by three each from No. 1 LSU and No. 3 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, one of college football's most potent scoring teams, placed two players on the offensive side of the ball and another on special teams.

There were five FWAA All-America repeat selections, including two receivers, Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon and Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles. Alabama defensive back Mark Barron and Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly also earned All-America honors for the second straight season. Kicker Quinn Sharp from Oklahoma State made the team last season as a punter.

Overall, eight of the 11 Division I Bowl Subdivision Conferences were represented on the team. The Big Ten had four players and the ACC two. Conference USA, the Mountain West, the Pac-12 and the WAC were each represented by one player.

First selected three years after the organization was formed, the FWAA's inaugural team included Army's Heisman Trophy tandem of Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis and Georgia Tech's Frank Broyles, who later became Arkansas' head football coach and athletic director.

Over the years, the FWAA Team has highlighted all the game's great players in several media forums.

From 1946-70, LOOK Magazine published the FWAA team and brought players and selected writers to New York City for a celebration. During that 25-year period, the FWAA team was introduced on national television shows by Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Perry Como and others.

After LOOK folded, the FWAA started a long association with NCAA Films (later known as NCAA Productions), which produced a 30-minute television show and sold it to sponsors. The team was part of ABC Television's 1981 College Football Series.

From 1983-90, the team was either on ABC or ESPN, and now has returned to the national spotlight on ABC.

The FWAA team has included most of the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award winners over the years and Outland Trophy winners. Those are the three oldest awards in major-college football.

For 68 years, the FWAA has selected an All-America team with the help of its members and an All-America Committee which represents all the regions in the country. The FWAA also selects the Outland Trophy winner (best interior lineman) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner (best defensive player).

Some of the true greats of the writing profession have helped to select this team over the years: Mark Blaudschun, Grantland Rice, Bert McGrane, Blackie Sherrod, Furman Bisher, Pat Harmon, Fred Russell, Edwin Pope, Murray Olderman, Paul Zimmerman and the list goes on and on. It is a team steeped in tradition and history and selected by a writers' group with the same attributes.

The Football Writers Association of America, a non-profit organization founded in 1941, consists of more than 1,200 men and women who cover college football for a living. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include gameday operations, major awards and its annual All-America team. For more information about the FWAA and its award programs, contact Steve Richardson at tigerfwaa@aol.com or 972-713-6198.

Morris is Leaving the South for the Orange in Syracuse

Morris is Leaving the South for the Orange in Syracuse

Lawrenceville, Georgia RB George Morris is an undervalued and unheralded ball carrier who went through his recruiting process thinking that he would have every school in the South on him, but that didn't happen the way he would have liked it to go. George patiently waited for more schools to come into the picture, but there was always one school that showed him love and stayed in constant contact with him all the way throughout his recruitment, and that team is the Syracuse Orange. Well that persistence by the Orange finally paid off yesterday when George gave his college commitment to Syracuse University and he couldn't be happier about his decision, "I am so pumped about giving my commitment to Syracuse. It finally feels like I have a weight lifted off my chest and now I can focus on my family, friends, my senior year and knowing where I will attend college. I don't think I could have made a better choice for me and I can't wait until I start my experience with the Orange, said Morris."

George is a well put together running back because of his size (6'1 190 lbs) and explosiveness that he displays every time he is on the football field. He runs with a purpose every time he touches the ball, and his goal is to reach the end zone on every play that is called for him. George has excellent vision when hitting the hole, and he is also an outstanding receiver out of the backfield. George has tons of capabilities and talents to succeed on the college playing field and saw Syracuse as the place that would help him become the best player he can eventually be, "I am a hard worker first and foremost. I never give less than 110% at any moment I am playing the game of football. I am a complete team player that is always willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the team. Syracuse is a blue collar kind of team and I think I fit in perfectly in their program. I think I made the best decision for me and the Orange will offer me the best chance to become the player I truly want to be, said Morris."

Throughout the process George Morris had always wanted to get his decision out of the way before Signing Day arrived. He wanted to have all the opportunities he needed before he was completely ready to make his commitment, and he was waiting to see if anymore schools would jump into his recruitment. Some schools like Illinois, Vanderbilt and Purdue came calling towards the latter parts of his recruiting process, but in the end Syracuse was always the school that showed him the most attention and made him feel the most wanted. "I choose Syracuse over East Carolina and Florida International. I mainly picked the Orange because they recruited me the hardest and stayed with me the longest throughout my whole recruitment. They made me feel wanted at every moment I spoke to the coaches. My relationship with Coach Wheatley and Coach Hackett is awesome and they made me feel apart of the team even when I was unsure as to who I will play with. They have a family up there in Syracuse and I can't wait to officially be apart of the Orange family, said the Central Gwinnett High School standout."

George Morris Highlights

2011 Stats: 145 carries, 1,059 yards, 17 Td's, 39 catches 395 receiving yards

College Offers: Syracuse (Committed), East Carolina, Florida International, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, South Alabama, UAB, Utah, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky. Others Interested: Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

About National Underclassmen Combines & NationalUnderclassmen.com
The National Underclassmen Showcase for Football was founded by the originators of the National Underclassmen Football Combines. Over the past five years, the NUC has led more than 3,000 athletes to division 1, 1aa, and DII scholarships scholarship offers while thousands more have gone on to play college ball. The company has taken the principle of the football showcase and is now applying it to lacrosse, bringing in the best football coaches and athletes to run the showcase, combined with the NUC's timing staff to bring the first true testing and showcase for Lax with the sole aim to get the athletes recruited for college. All events are video taped and the results will be sent to every college in the U.S. To see what NUC’s done in the past, visit http://www.nationalunderclassmen.com. The company is proud to expand its program to more than 60 cities and more than 180 events throughout the U.S.

For high school football athletes who are diamonds in the rough or who play for small schools, or elite athletes looking to be seen as early as possible, Schuman’s provides a forum and showcase for those athletes to expose their talents. It is their job to get that information out to college football recruiting teams nationwide. Visit http://www.nationalunderclassmen.com to find out more information.
