Desert Ridge upsets Chandler in 5A-I state tournament

Desert Ridge upsets Chandler in 5A-I state tournament

With inches to go for a first down and a little more than 3 yards for the winning touchdown, Chandler lined up three backs behind quarterback Brett Hundley.
Everybody knew what was coming, especially Mesa Desert Ridge's defenders.
They stuffed running back Rufus Green at the line for no gain, and visiting Desert Ridge ran off the remaining 36 seconds and held on for a stunning 38-35 Class 5A Division I first-round playoff victory Friday night at Chandler.

Desert Ridge (8-3), which overcame a 35-24 deficit in the second half and held Chandler to just one second-half touchdown, will play host to 15th-seeded Gilbert next week in the quarterfinals.
"I'm happy," Desert Ridge coach Jeremy Hathcock said about Chandler's play calling.
After Desert Ridge moved 95 yards on 12 plays and scored on sophomore Kevin Walters' 18-yard run to go ahead 38-35 with 4:46 left, Hundley drove Chandler (7-4) from its 33 to Desert Ridge's 5. He threw a perfect pass between defenders to Michael Okwonko for a 27-yard completion on fourth and 8. He then ran seven yards to the 5.
Chandler then tried to go smash-mouth with Hundley moving from the shotgun to under center.
"We discussed it back and forth and thought that is what they'd anticipate," coach Jim Ewan said about Hundley making the play at the end.
Hundley was stopped for no gain, and Paul Perkins ran up the middle for a little more than a yard. Chandler let the clock tick down to 41 seconds before calling its last timeout.
Desert Ridge loaded up the box, and Green ran into a pile for nothing.
"If we could go back again, we'd do it differently," said Ewan, who coached his final game at Chandler. "But we can't go back again
