Quick hits from Columbia Junior Combine!

·        Dutch Fork HS’s Isaac Harris is simply a monster on the football field. At 6’7 254, he is a dominant offensive lineman and has great quickness for a player his size. By taking home the Overall MVP at the combine, Harris only increases his chances of making it big.

·        Thomas Turnase (Wando HS), a dual threat, won the QB MVP. The 5’11.5 161 lb standout throws a very good ball, has solid fundamentals and consistently maintained his composure. With a 4.25 shuttle run also in his bag of tricks, Turnase is a danger every time he gets the ball.

·        Jordan Lester (South Florence) is a hard working linebacker and a leader on the gridiron. Lester busted his tail throughout the combine, had a 9’2 broad jump and did a great job during 1 on 1’s en route to winning the LB MVP and Leadership awards.

·        Cameron Mahone (El Dorado) is both quick and powerful in the backfield. The 5’6 186 lb standout ran a 4.30 40, had a 8’8 broad jump, 32 inch vertical and bench pressed 185 lbs 22 times en route to winning RB MVP. Impressive to say the least.

·        Props must also go out to Glen Hilliard (TL Hanna),  LaQuavas Watt (Abbeville) and Preston Gavins (Stratford) who all did a great job on the field.

Sophomores Star at Dutch Fork HS!

TL Hannah's CJ Meredith capped off a star studded sophomore combine last Saturday at Dutch Fork HS. The 6'5 204 lb tight end had a 32 inch vertical, 9'2 broad jump, ran a 4.27 shuttle, 4.58 40, bench pressed 155 lbs 28 times and was a man amongst boys during 1 on 1's. With height, nicely ran routes and great hands, Meredith is a complete TE.
Langston Brown (Timmonsville) put down the defensive linemen during the 1 on 1's en route to being named OL MVP. A monstrous 6'0.5 364, Brown had tremendous strength, good hands and uncanny toughness. At this level, Brown appears to be unstoppable.
Demetric Gray (Blythewood) had quite the day. A 5'9.5 168 lb QB, Gray has a cannon for an arm, reads defenses well, had a 30 inch vertical, 8'3 broad jump and ran a 4.43 shuttle. Naturally, he took home the QB MVP. A dual threat? you bet!
Damar Hall (Blythewood) is an athletically gifted receiver with a great jump off of the snap. The 5'11.5 178 lb Hall runs nice routes, has good hands, a 31.5 inch vertical, 9'10 broad jump and ran a 4.42 shuttle en route to winning the WR MVP. Hall's abilities would make a big difference to any offense.
David Sutton (Dutch Fork) is a star on the rise, taking home the OL MVP as a sophomore even though he participated with the juniors. At 6'2 310, Sutton did a great job during 1 on 1's, using his herculean size to his advantage.
The Columbia region continues to produce talented, hard working, young football players and is likely to do so for a very long time.

Quick Hits from Columbia South Carolina Freshman Session!

·        Jordan Berry (Dutch Fork HS) was the leader of a talented pack, bringing home the Overall MVP.   At 5'10 146, Berry had tremendous hands, a 9'0 broad jump, ran a 4.38 shuttle and 4.63 40. With the help of a good weight lifting program, Berry will be an even bigger problem for defenses.

·        Augusta Christian's Thomas "Money  in the" Banks may only be in 8th grade, but he already has the looks of a super star. The 5'8.5 152 lb defensive back had an 8'7 broad jump, ran a 4.40 shuttle, has good hips and changes direction well. During 1 on 1's, he was all over the place. We can't wait to see what he does in the next few years.

·        Tyler Roberson (Augusta Christian) has a great attitude, works hard and knows how to keep those around him pumped up. A 6'0.5 178 lb QB, Roberson also had an 8'1 broad jump and ran a 4.31 shuttle.

·        Joshua Mercer (South Effingham) is a speed demon with awesome athleticism. The 5'10.5 171 lb Mercer put up tremendous stats, jumping an 8'10 on the broad, running a 4.32 shuttle, 4.58 40 and bench pressing 135 lbs 22 times. From an athletic standpoint, Mercer is the total package.

·        Bamberg HS' Nicholas Halmon did a terrific job during 1 on 1's and has very good strength. The 5'9.5 165 lb prospect, who won the LB MVP, had an 8'5 broad jump, ran a 4.58 shuttle, tossed up 155 lbs 23 times and was a beast during 1 on 1's. He is flexible, moves down hill well and listens at all times. This is what coaches are looking for from their players.

·        Richard Hayes was in a league of his own during the individual period, putting an everlasting impression on our coaches. The well deserved QB MVP at 5'9 145, Hayes throws a great ball, is a leader on the field, makes good choices and maintained his cool at all times.

Jachin Watkins NUC Wilmington/Jacksonville MVP Interview

Coach Schuman: What did you do to prepare for the National Underclassmen Combine?
Jachin Watkins:  To prepare for the NUC I trained during school doing combine events as well as afterschool on my own.

Coach Schuman: Have you been to the NUC before? How did you do? What were your expectations going into this years event?
Jachin Watkins:  This was my first NUC event. I received the overall Freshman MVP award. I didn’t really know what to expect but I expressed to everyone that my goal was to bring home the overall MVP and I did.

Coach Schuman: You were MVP! What are your goals now?
Jachin Watkins:  My goal is to improve my skill level by improving my 40 time; increasing my strength so my bench reps increase; and get stronger in my broad and vertical jumps. I am setting my sights on the RB MVP next time around.

Coach Schuman: How did you hear about the National Underclassmen Combine and what was your favorite part about the event?
Jachin Watkins:  I heard about it from friends and my coach and then I researched it on the internet. My favorite part was the 1 on 1’s against the LB.

Coach Schuman: If you can choose 5 schools where you would be interested in playing what would they be?
Jachin Watkins:  1) University of Southern California; 2) Univeristy of Miami; 3) Ohio State University; 4) Louisiana State University; 5) University of North Carolina

Coach Schuman: What do you like about high school football? What are your goals for your team and yourself?
Jachin Watkins:  I like the speed and pace of high school football. My goal is to earn a starting varsity spot and help my team win another state championship.

Coach Schuman: Do you play other sports? Tell me about your accomplishments?
Jachin Watkins:  Yes. I play basketball and lacrosse and run track. I play on an AAU traveling basketball team which gives me the opportunity to play against some of the best players on the east coast. I am very proud of the fact that I have a 4.25 GPA and excel in my honors classes and all areas of my academics.

Coach Schuman: What is your favorite thing about football? What makes it a great sport to you?
Jachin Watkins:  I love running the ball, the contact, and how quick the game is. I love supporting my team and hearing the crowd cheer for us. The family feel of the team and the spirit of cooperation between the team, coaches, parents and fans is great.

Coach Schuman: Tell me about your training regimen...How do you get better every day?
Jachin Watkins:  I work out during school in weight training as well as afterschool. I belong to the YMCA and work out there as well as by participating in other sports(basketball and lacrosse) to stay in shape.

Coach Schuman: What are you looking for in a college? Academically? football?
Jachin Watkins:  I am looking for a college with an excellent academic program so that I can get a top-notch education and a great football program that will help me improve on my skills and propel me to the next level.

Juniors Justify their Talent in Little Rock!

Big time prospects took Little Rock by storm last Saturday afternoon at Searcy HS. The NUC's inaugural Arkansas combine came perhaps a few years too late but after witnessing the abundance of talent, the event appears set for a long, successful run in one of America's football havens.
Des Arc HS' Cody Robinson brought home the Overall MVP award. The 6'0 192 lb safety was the center of attention during 1 on 1's, smothering the WR's throughout the session. Robinson is a solid athlete as well, with a 30 inch vertical, 9'8 broad jump, 4.59 shuttle and 4.59 40 to boot. Keep an eye out here.
Tommy Jackson (J.A. Fair) took action on the football field. And did he ever! At 6'2.5 326, Jackson was the OL MVP and Leadership Award winner. Jackson hustled throughout the day, used his massive size do reign supreme during 1 on 1's and tossed up 185 lbs 19 times. Coaches have to love a player like this.
Justin Hollis (Des Arc) was the best QB of the session. The strong armed 5'10.5 172 lb prospect had excellent athleticism for a Q, with a 9'2 broad jump, 4.52 shuttle and 4.5 40 in his arsenal. He is definitely a dual threat.
Cody Weaver, also from the deeply talented Des Arc HS, wrecked havoc on the offense during the individual period. Lean and mean at 5'8 152, Weaver locked down the WR's, deflected a number of passes, had a 9'1 broad jump and ran a 4.50 shuttle. He deservingly won the DB MVP and opened the eyes of many.
The wide receiver was the position of the combine, with BJ Slaughter (Searcy), Darreal Mems (J.A. Fair) and Jalen Jones (Conway) sharing the WR MVP award. All three were a bit short, but have big time talent. The trio had good hands and quick feet, powering them to the promise land during the individual period.
Arkansas' combine appears here to stay. Thankfully so.

News and Notes from Little Rock's Morning Session!

It was the first time but certainly not the last Schuman's NUC graced the field in Arkansas. Little Rock was rockin' indeed last Saturday morning, with an impressive group of 8-10th graders leaving their blood, sweat and tears on the gridiron with the prospects of earning a scholarship to play at the next level.
Marquis Walker (Rison HS) was the top player of the session, winning the Sophomore Overall MVP. The 5'9.5 173 lb standout had a 34.5 inch vertical, 9'0 broad jump, ran a 4.57, bench pressed 155 lbs 20 times and put on a clinic during 1 on 1's. He definitely has a bright future in football.
"Marvelous" Marvell Harris (Little Rock Central) is a stud athlete and a gifted running back. With the ability to do it all at 5'7, Harris had a 35.5 inch vertical, 9'9 broad jump, ran a 4.36 shuttle, 4.54 40 and was the top RB during 1 on 1's. His outstanding day earned him the coveted Combine King and RB MVP awards.
Tysean Norris (Harding Academy) and Desmond Smith (Bentonsville) shared the WR MVP award but have a lot more in common than that. Both prospects had quick feet, good hands and caught the ball well.
Central HS' Brian Anderson is a powerful linebacker and won the LB MVP. At 5'9.5 228 lbs, Anderson bench pressed 155 lbs 24 times, ran a 4.55 shuttle and played physically during 1 on 1's.
Dillon Turner is only 5'4 123 lbs, but as an 8th Grader, he has plenty of time to develop. Talent wise, he has terrific mechanics, makes good decision and is light on his feet. A unanimous choice for the 8th grade MVP, Turner has a bright future.
Finally, Jemar Clark is a big body and a lineman who has to be respected. The 6'4.5 276 lb OL MVP pushed around the opposing linemen during 1 on 1's and proved that size does matter.
Arkansas has an abundance of talent and a return seems imminent.
