NUC Exclusive INTERVIEW WITH QB MVP Joe Portaro, Faith Lutheran HS-National Underclassmen Las Vegas

Coach Schuman: What did you do to prepare for the National Underclassmen Combine?
Joe Portaro:My dad and my coaches are very helpful in helping me be well prepared since this is football off season, and basketball just ended. They have made the facilities available for workouts, as well as encouraging our teams receivers to work out with me a couple of weeks before the combine.
Also I have scheduled work outs at the YMCA for weight training as well as workouts to increase my times in the shuttle and 40 which I improved on both at the combine.

Coach Schuman:Have you been to the NUC before? How did you do? What were your expectations going into this years event?
Joe Portaro:Yes last year I participated in the Las Vegas combine and was named QB MVP and qualified to attend the Ultimate 100 camp in LA where my performance earned me the Camp Leadership Award which gave me the NCSA recruiting schlolarship over all the other athletes, and also qualified me for the NUC Top Athlete camp at the University of Oklahoma, which was awesome and I got to meet a few of the Oklahoma players. Coach Schuman and the NUC staff made all this possible by giving me the opportunity to show my skills.

Coach Schuman: You were MVP! What are your goals now?
Joe Portaro:My goals now are to work harder to be ready for the NUC in LA, and I will do my best to become the MVP in LA. We also just started our informal  Faith Lutheran team workouts, and prepare for a great season. I just want to do my best and hopefully some of the colleges that are showing interest in me, will see even a better season and that I will get some good offers

Coach Schuman:How did you hear about the National Underclassmen Combine and what was your favorite part about the event?
Joe Portaro:My dad is always looking for camps and helping promote my skills and he found the information for the NUC camp last year online and signed me up right away

Coach Schuman:If you can choose 5 schools where you would be interested in playing what would they be?
Joe Portaro:Actually my dad and I have decided that we just want to have the opportunity for me to play in college and so limiting my interest to only 5 schools would not look good for other schools that are showing interest in me. So here are the schools that have sent me letters of interest with the few that send me something regularly being first: UCLA, Colorado, Oregon State, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, Cal, Boise State, TCU, UNLV, San Diego State. I am interested in any school that wants me and will give me the chance to reach my dream of playing college footballWhich ever school gives me an opportunity to play what I love.
Is very important and I would like to play in the western US so my family and friends can come to games. Plus the academics for the school I go to will be very important . My whole family is very supportive of me, I have two older brothers Mike and Rico who were all state at Faith Lutheran  and both of them played college football and my sister Christina will play college volleyball or basketball. she is really good at both!!

Coach Schuman:What do you like about high school football? What are your goals for your team and yourself?
Everything!!! I am already feeling a little sad about the thought of my last game at Faith Lutheran next year. We are a family at Faith and my team mates are my best friends all year, and my coaches are the best I could ever want, and they really care about me and help me a lot. I also like the fact that I meet a lot of players from other teams and we are actually friends off the field. I know without my team mates and coaches I would not able to accomplish my goals. I am really lucky to have Don Pearson who is the best reciever is Nevada and has a great offer from one of the best colleges in the country, and Brett Lubbe who will definaitely be a college player
Joe Portaro:My goals for my team are to win a state championship, and even though people say it's not a good chance me and my team mates are playing to win everything. My personal goals are to make first team all conference at QB again, and Kicker, and to be all state in both. Plus I want to show my leadership skills even more, cause I know college coaches really want a good leader. I also am really focussed on my grades cause I know how important it is for me to get more offers from some schools. This past semester I made merit honor roll with a 3.35 GPA which is really good at Faith because it a pretty tough school

Coach Schuman:Do you play other sports? Tell about your accomplishments?
Joe Portaro:Yes, I have played Lacrosse for one year, and have played basketball every year. I love all sports and our school is a lot smaller so they need some of us football players to play basketball. I am probably the best defender on the team and average about 7 points a game, and I like to shoot the three ball, but the coaches are not that excited about it. If basketball was my main sport then I would spend more time in the off season getting better, but I know my future is in football

Coach Schuman:What is your favorite thing about football? what makes it a great sport to you?
Joe Portaro:For me as a QB, I get to touch the ball every play, and the pressure is what I like, and I really feel I can make something good happen on every play. The teams in our conference are the best in the State and knowing that I threw for almost 300 yards in games again, three of the top 5 teams in the state, really gives me confidence that I can do well in college too.
Actually, I love everything about football!!!!

Coach Schuman:Tell me about your training regimen...How do you get better every day?
Joe Portaro:I am pretty much in training the whole year. I have taken weights as an elective every semester so I can keep strength my  up and to add weight. Plus being in Basketball after football season is over keeps my endurance and speed up and then in the spring we start football conditioning  three days a week. I also eat healthy and my mom makes sure I am taking the right vitamins and doesnt let me eat to much junk.

Coach Schuman:What are you looking for in college? Academically? football?
I know college might be my last football time, even though my dad and coaches tell me if I keep improving, I might be able to get drafted . So I want to go to school that  is good at helping its athletes stay focussed on their studies, cause that is what we are really there for, and I want to have a good career when I am done with football. I know that going to a big name school could mean I wont get much playing time in the first couple years, but actually I think whoever wants me on their team, my goal will be to be the starter even as a freshman. I just want to be part of another football family like I have at Faith Lutheran, and really enjoy my college years. I also think me being a kicker and punter can get me playing time if I am not the starter at QB

National Underclassmen Football Combine Camp-Las Vegas Overall February 13, 2010

NUC ALum-Malcom Griggs, Piscataway HS Signs with New Hampshire

Malcolm Griggs Piscataway HS, NJ Class of 2010: Griggs is a terrific athlete and won the QB MVP at the renowned NUC South Jersey last year. He has good speed and leaping ability, taking the field at multiple positions at Piscataway. On an interesting note, Griggs, a terrific QB in his own right, will play safety at the University of New Hampshire in the fall.
Future Outlook: At 6'2 185, Griggs has the ability to make a difference.  Considering he played QB, safety and WR in high school, his athleticism is virtually unmatched. Griggs needs to gain a little bit of weight and shouldn't have much of a problem doing so. Expect to see this exciting playmaker in action for the Wildcats in 2011.

NUC Miami Preview: The National Underclassmen Combine: Returning to the Sunshine State to Find Football’s Future Stars

The National Underclassmen Combine: Returning to the Sunshine State to Find Football’s Future Stars

By Matt Yanofsky

The National Underclassmen Combine returns to the deeply talented Miami area February 20 and 21 at Cooper City High School. Throughout the NUC’s six-year history, the Miami camps have produced some of the top prospects nationwide.

Ransom Everglades HS’ Gideon Ajagbe thoroughly dominated the ’09 junior session with a 4.18 shuttle run, 10’1 broad jump, 31.5 inch vertical and sensational skill during 1 on 1’s. Ajagbe, who just completed his senior year, will be a member of the national powerhouse Florida Gators this fall. Gilliver Prep’s Tacoi Sumler and Seminole Ridge’s Gary Holmes, two terrific prospects, took home the Overall MVP award at the sophomore and freshman combine respectively.

With stars like Ajagbe, Sumler and Holmes attracting national attention, NUC President and CEO David Schuman is excited to see what the ’10 combine has to offer.

“The talent in Miami is always amongst the best for so many reasons”, said Schuman. “These kids can flat out play football and have sensational athletic gifts. As a powerhouse state for high school football with a number of the top teams nationwide, this year’s combine is guaranteed to showcase some of America’s top prospects”.

All athletes participate in pro-style combine testing, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press, vertical leap, and shuttle run along with position specific drills, 1 on 1’s and 3 on 3 competitions.

Athletes can sign up for the Miami combine on www.nationalunderclassmen.com or call 1-888-NUC-MVP1 for more details.

NUC Houston: Preview:The National Underclassmen Combine: Where Houston’s future stars are discovered

The National Underclassmen Combine: Where Houston’s future stars are discovered

By Matt Yanofsky

The Houston area has produced some of the best high school prospects in recent memory. QB Vince Young is a glaring example of an elite athlete that can call himself a Houstonian. Young, now of the Tennessee Titans, was voted the greatest prospect in Rivals.com history, as his stellar career at Madison High School made him one of the most sought after players in history. Although he is not NUC alum, Young inspired many of their proceeding prospects.

Since 2006, a number of H-Town’s best have showcased their talents at the NUC’s area combine, leaving their blood, sweat and tears on the gridiron.
The 09’ combine had a number of sensational players including Thurgood Marshall’s DeAndre Washington, Cinco Ranch’s KC Nlemchi and Baytown Sterling’s Rayniel Nelson among others. While the aforementioned players are undoubtedly excellent prospects, one elite level wideout stole the show.

Last year’s combine was headlined by University of Oklahoma bound James Haynes, a local great in his own right. Haynes drew comparisons to Randy Moss with his out of this world athleticism, exceptional route running and great hands. The 6’0.5 183 lb star took home the WR MVP and quickly became the talk of the town after his jaw dropping performance.

“Houston is a football hotbed without question and James Haynes is a prime example of the kind of players that come out of that area”, said NUC CEO and President David Schuman. “With a number of former participants from this combine now playing at big time D-1 schools, naturally, I am excited to return and see the next group of football’s future superstars”.

The 2010 combine takes place February 20-21 at Westfield High School. Current 8th/9th graders are slated to compete at 8 am and sophomore are scheduled to hit the field at 1 pm on the 20th, while juniors take center stage 1 pm February 21.

All athletes will partake in pro-style combine testing, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press, vertical leap, and shuttle run along with position specific drills, 1 on 1’s and 3 on 3 competitions.

Will the next great player grace the field this year? It sure appears likely.

Athletes can sign up for the Houston combine on www.nationalunderclassmen.com or call 1-888-NUC-MVP1 for more details.

NUC Hawaii:Preview:The NUC: Hitting the Island in ‘10

The NUC: Hitting the Island in ‘10

By Matt Yanofsky

2010 marks the start of the next decade and the dawning of a new era for the National Underclassmen Combine.

Athletes are going to face more stringent competition than in previous years. Coaches will be instructed work players unlike ever before, greatly broadening the horizons. Literally.

For the first time in its six-year history, the NUC ventures to the Aloha State, providing coaches the opportunity to temporarily abandon their winter coats at the New Jersey headquarters in lieu of shorts and a t-shirt in sunny Hawaii.

Dubbed as the “Island Combine”, the inaugural Hawaii event is slated for February 21 and takes place at beautiful Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. All athletes will partake in pro-style combine testing, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press, vertical leap, and shuttle run along with position specific drills, 1 on 1’s and 3 on 3 competitions.

The 8th-9th grade session starts at 8 am, while the sophomores and juniors grind it out on the gridiron at 1 pm sharp. With a never before seen group of players slated to participate in the upcoming combine, NUC CEO and President David Schuman is excited to see what Hawaii has to offer.

“Our Hawaii camp is going to be a phenomenal experience not only for the athletes, but for the coaches as well”, exclaimed Schuman. “Many of the players haven’t received proper recruiting exposure due to lack of opportunities since Hawaii is not part of the Continental US, making it difficult for them to attend events elsewhere.”

“I am excited to help guide players in Hawaii and hopefully we can help discover and develop the next Peyton Manning, Brian Urlacher or Randy Moss”.

Athletes can sign up for the Hawaii combine on www.nationalunderclassmen.com or call 1-888-NUC-MVP1 for more details.

Exclusive NUC Interview with Sam Kamp of Mountain View- Mesa, Phoenix NUC Junior DL MVp

Coach Schuman and Sam Kamp at NUC Phoenix

Coach Schuman: What did you do to prepare for the National Underclassmen Combine?

Sam Kamp: I went to the pre-combine training the Friday before. The pre combine training helped me prepare mentally for what was coming up and I got to reinforce and work on some of my skills.

Coach Schuman: Have you been to the NUC before? How did you do? What were your expectations going into this years event?
Sam Kamp:I've been to a few football camps but never an NUC combine. I expected plenty of competition and i thought there was alot of great athletes there. I feel individually that my times and max's weren't what i was hoping for but i'm always improving and will make my goals.

Coach Schuman:You were MVP! What are your goals now?
Sam Kamp:One of my biggest personal goals is to gain 15 or 20 pounds of muscle while keeping my first two steps off the line quick. I'm also planning on getting my 40 time down to a 4.8 before the season starts.

Coach Schuman: How did you hear about the National Underclassmen Combine and what was your favorite part about the event?
Sam Kamp:I've been hearing about the NUC camp for years now from friends and football players that i've talked to. My favorite part had to be the one on one's just because of the competitiveness that comes with it.

Coach Schuman:If you can choose 6 schools where you would be interested in playing what would they be?
Sam Kamp:UCLA, San Diego State, Cal, Oregon, Texas, ASU

Coach Schuman:What do you like about high school football? What are your goals for your team and yourself?
Sam Kamp:I love the comradery and working alongside my team mates to be the best. The school that I play for; Mesa Mountain View, has one goal every season and that is to win the state championship.

Coach Schuman: Do you play other sports? Tell about your accomplishments?
Sam Kamp:Right now I'm mainly focusing on football, but i also throw shotput and discus for track and play basketball on the side for some club teams.

Coach Schuman: What is your favorite thing about football? what makes it a great sport to you?
Sam Kamp:The physical aspect of the sport. If you don't love to hit people, play tennis.

Coach Schuman: Tell me about your training regimen...How do you get better every day?
Sam Kamp:Right now my training involves lifting, quickness training, and eating. My two favorite workouts have got to be jumping boxes and Filibertos patron burrito.

Coach Schuman: What are you looking for in college? Academically? football?
Sam Kamp:I'm looking for a college with a successful record, i love to win. And academically i'm planning right now on going into buisness and marketing. I want to work for Nike one day.
